Our Pinewood Derby this year will be on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at Trinity Presbyterian Church from approximately 9am-1pm.
Late check-in will be at 9-9:30am. 9:30-10am will be Scouts' choice voting. Racing will begin promptly at 10am. Awards for all competition categories will be awarded immediately after racing.
Our Tuesday 1/7 den meetings will be dedicated to car designs. Our cutout sleepover is canceled due to inclement weather.
Instead, our Tuesday 1/14 den meeting is being replaced with a new cut out night from 6:30-8:30pm.
If you are unable to attend the cutout event, please reach out to the Cubmaster to arrange your car for cutout.
Yes, this is a competition, but it should be a light-hearted one, mostly focused on having fun and learning responsibility. All scouts should obey the scout law when they compete; for example, be trustworthy that you made your own car, friendly and kind to your fellow competitors, cheerful whether winning first or not placing, and clean in our sportsmanship.
Don't forget, even though this is a competition, our goal is to HAVE FUN and follow the Cub Scout motto DO YOUR BEST.
Cars should be completed by the meeting on Tuesday Jan 28. Cars will be checked in that night during the meeting 7-8pm. We encourage all racers to complete their car by this time. Late registration will be available Friday night as well. Last opportunity to register will be Saturday morning before the race, but it is discouraged.
We follow the general rules of North Star District Pinewood Derby, since our derby winners will proceed to the district event.
See 2025 North Star District Rules for the rules that all cars must follow. Just like district, we will compete by den. In our pack race, all cars will compete in all categories. The scout may choose to focus on craftsmanship/originality and violate the weight limit, but forgo the speed competition.
Parents, please allow your scouts to do much as possible for their age group!
Our scouts will compete in the categories of Speed, Craftsmanship, and Originality.
Check out the rules linked above for each category.
First place winners from each category and group will proceed to the district race.
This category is easy to explain. The fastest car in your competition group wins. All cars will be able to race in every lane of the track to ensure that no cars have a lane advantage. It is critical that all rules be followed in order to compete for speed. We will also race the fastest from each group for a Top Speed award.
Craftsmanship is judged based on neatness, detailing, color/presentation, and scout ability (is it obvious the scout contributed).
Cars may exceed weight and not meet wheel (all four touching) requirements may still compete for craftsmanship.
Originality is judged based on uniqueness of design, uniqueness of color/presentation, execution of theme, and scout ability (is it obvious the scout contributed).
Cars may exceed weight and not meet wheel (all four touching) requirements may still compete for originality.
Dens will be organized by den to compete.
Winners from each group and category of our Pack Derby have the option to proceed to the district event, being held Saturday, February 22, 2025.
Please let our Cubmaster know if you placed first in one of the categories and intend to participate, so that we can get you registered. You'll need to check-in your car at one of the Tuesdays den meetings leading up to the event or on the Friday night before the event.
One the day of the district competition, speed competitors will need to appear by 10:30am. Craftsmanship and originality competitors will either come to the beginning of the ceremony for awards or report later for a combined award ceremony. Details will be provided closer to the event.
See more information about the event at North Star District Pinewood Derby.
